Former Lawrence Co. animal shelter director sentenced in animal cruelty case

LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Former Lawrence County animal shelter director Bobbie Taylor was sentenced for her animal cruelty conviction Tuesday afternoon.

The judge gave her nine months in jail, but that sentence was suspended in favor of 24 months probation and an $11,100 fine.

As a part of her probation, she is not allowed to have any other animals besides the 10 she already owns. She will also have to submit to a mental health evaluation.

If Taylor violates probation, she will go to jail.

Her defense plans to file post-trial motions. The defense attorney said the "truth will come out" in the appeal process.

Letters of support for Taylor were sent to the court. Three people spoke on her behalf.

Taylor was found guilty of six counts of animal cruelty earlier this year due to overcrowding in her animal shelter for the county. Investigators said they found emaciated, sick and injured animals in the shelter, and some were dead.
