COLBERT COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Colbert County commissioners are considering a request from the Sons of Confederate Veterans William A. Johnson Camp 898.

"They want a monument to be placed on the courthouse grounds honoring Gen. Deshler, who was a Civil War general in the Confederate Army," said Colbert County Commissioner David Black.

Black says the organization wants to recognize a hero. Deshler was a Tuscumbia native who fought for his country. He says it makes sense to put the monument at the local Deshler High School since the school is already named after the general.

The Commission will have to consider the public's opinion when considering whether to allow the monument to be erected.

"We don't know if anyone is going to oppose objections at our next meetings on June 5. We will have to deal with that accordingly and maybe have a public hearing for people to express their concerns," said Black.

WAFF 48 News reached out to Sons of Confederate organization for a statement. They have not responded.

The Commission says the monument request will be on their agenda for the June 5 meeting.
