FORT PAYNE, AL (WAFF) - Plans for a new welcome center in Fort Payne have been scrapped.
The city council voted unanimously on Wednesday to end the project and demolish what is left of the old Mapco convenience store.
In April, the council approved a firm to do cost estimates after architects came up with a final plan.
The council has now decided to turn it into a parking lot with landscaping.
"We can come back at some future time and put exactly what we want to put there but for right now we can take the money that was going to go into that project and put it into additional projects in the downtown area and try to get some of those projects up and finished," says Fort Payne City Councilman Wade Hill.
Demolition of the structure could begin as early as next week.
