LAWRENCE COUNTY, AL (WAFF) - Lawrence County Commissioners are saying the county now has some financial "room to breathe" after a lucrative settlement was approved Monday morning at a special called meeting.

BFI Waste Services of Alabama, LLC, agreed to pay Lawrence County $260,000 within 30 days deposited into the general fund, $50,000 within seven days for auditor and legal fees, and approximately $40,000 annually for road work.

In addition, BFI agreed to pay a host fee of $1.25 per ton of solid waste that goes through the gate of Morris Farm Landfill. The revised contract states that amount will increase by two cents until 2023 and by one cent until 2070.
