SPANISH FORT, AL (WALA) -

While it's sprinkled with some of the area's best seafood restaurants and a couple of boat launches, Spanish Fort City leaders believe the Causeway is their biggest untapped resource.

Monday night the City Council adopted a master plan that if approved would not only connect but transform it into a regional destination filled with two parks, with fishing piers and nature trails, plus 5 1/2 miles of sidewalks for bikes and pedestrians along the Causeway.

"It will give us an opportunity to have more people out there -- certainly enhances the entrance to our county to our city -- it's the crown jewel of the Delta. We have an opportunity to do something very special and that's what we are looking to do," said Mayor Michael McMillan, Spanish Fort.

Mayor McMillan says once the plan is approved they'll begin the process of applying for grants to help offset the costs of what they want to do.

Resident Melanie Baker was hoping to weigh in on the plan at Monday night's meeting.

"I think it would be a great idea for development. I think it is an area that can use development and would supply income to the area," said Baker.

While she's all for biking paths and trails -- Baker does have concerns over a fishing pier.

"The only thing I worry about developing that are is what happens next time a hurricane hits. Even Meaher Park has had the pier demolished after hurricanes so that would be my only concern is what do you do about rebuilding," said Baker.

She will have an opportunity to have her say at the council's next regular meeting on May 7th, where they'll hold a public hearing. Meanwhile, to see more details about this master plan -- including artist renderings and exact proposed locations click here.
