Grissom student awarded for saving man's life

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - A Grissom High School Senior was honored Monday for saving a man's life.

"I'm very nervous," Jaylon Decrow said as her peers poured into the school's auditorium. Members of the community and the school's JROTC program put together a ceremony to recognize her heroic actions.

On September 21, a man was riding his motorcycle down Bailey Cove Road when he slammed into a guardrail. Before being rushed to the hospital, Decrow jumped into action using her belt as a tourniquet in an effort to save the man's leg.

She says her JROTC training as well as instinct triggered her actions. Huntsville Police Chief Mark McMurray says that type of training is very useful and something many people should learn. "She reacted with a level of responsibility that is years ahead of what you would expect a teenager to do," Chief McMurray said.

Decrow was given a proclamation from Mayor Battle, a certificate from the Huntsville Police Department and a medal of heroism and a battalion coin from the Grissom High School JROTC.
