FULTON COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

Two metro Atlanta counties have declared a state of emergency after Irma ripped through the region, causing widespread damage and left over a million and a half customers in the dark.

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners voted on Wednesday to declare a local state of emergency to help deal with the dangerous conditions left behind because of Tropical Storm Irma.

The unanimous vote directs the Atlanta-Fulton County Emergency Management Agency to activate the Emergency Operations Plan, allowing the county to coordinate the response to the storm with authorities on the federal, state and local levels.

The resolution seeks Fulton County’s assistance in efforts to protect public health, preserve public safety, minimize property damage and ensure the economic benefit of the impacted areas in the county.

The CEO of DeKalb County has declared a local state of emergency after Tropical Storm Irma caused widespread damage in the county.

Michael Thurmond’s declaration enables the county to be eligible to receive additional state and federal resources to aid in the response and recovery.

According to the county, approximately 54 percent (170,000) of the homes in DeKalb County lost power during the peak of the storm. As of 11 a.m. on Wednesday, 62,000 customers were still without power, more than any other Metro Atlanta county.

The county is working with Georgia Power to restore service to homes as soon as possible. More than 100 trees remain down across roads and in rights of way.

Residents can report downed trees and road blockages to Fulton County’s Public Works Dept. at 404-613-3108.
