DOTHAN, Ala. (AP) - Howard Purvee is putting the skills he learned from a long career as a retail manager to work in a new setting - the classroom.
The 47-year-old taught his first math classes this month at Girard Middle School in Dothan.
Girard Middle School Principal Darius McKay says people who choose teaching as a second career bring valuable perspective and experience to the classroom.
The Dothan Eagle reports that Purvee, a former Wal-Mart manager, went back to school a few years ago to earn a teaching degree.
Purvee isn't the only new second-career teacher starting work at Girard this year.
Amy Thomas was a stay-at-home mother before going back to school to earn a master's degree in education. She also taught her first class as the school year opened this month.
