Capitol Police say individual drove into barrier, car

WASHINGTON (AP) - A driver struck a barrier and a police cruiser near the Library of Congress on Monday, injuring a U.S. Capitol Police officer, the police said.

The individual was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. The officer also was taken to the hospital and released after being treated for minor injuries.

Capitol Police said there was no evidence to indicate any nexus to terrorism. They said the suspect has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon, assaulting a police officer and aggravated reckless driving.

Police have not identified the driver.

As police investigated the crash, they warned Capitol Hill staff and others via email that they may soon hear a loud bang or pop as police worked to "disrupt the vehicle's trunk."

At 2:29 p.m., a voice could be heard over police radio yelling "fire in the hole, fire in the hole." Seconds later, a muffled bang could be heard from about 200 yards away.

Police subsequently sent out an email stating that all test results were negative, but the immediate area remained closed to pedestrians for further investigation. Most of the roads closed in connection with the investigation have been opened.
