HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville city leaders are looking at a new future for the residents and businesses in west Huntsville. They are making way for a new project designed to breathe new life into the community.

On Thursday night, they rezoned almost three acres of land right across from Lowe Mill for a mixed-use development. It was one of the last requirements before the developer can move forward with building a 50,000 square foot development on the site.

The building will include a mix of retail, office, restaurant and apartment space.

The Nashville developer is calling the development Invent Huntsville.

The company has similar revitalization projects in Nashville.

The West Huntsville Civic Association is hoping the project will bring new life to the area.

“Due to the scale of the development and the land use, it will not overwhelm the neighborhood. It will be in keeping with the fabric of the community, and it will just add to the character of the surrounding area,” said Michelle McMullan a member of the West Huntsville Civic Association.

Right now, the city still owns the property. But now that's it's rezoned, the city plans to move forward with selling the land to the developer.

City officials say it's still maybe months or even a year before construction begins.
