TONEY, AL (WAFF) -

Six years ago on April 27, 2011, people all throughout our state suffered unimaginable loss. Hundreds died and thousands of homes were damaged and destroyed.

That includes Toney, Alabama, where homes were swept away. Six years later, all that’s left for some is the foundation.

Timmie Davis has called his Toney neighborhood home for nearly a decade. Out of all those years, he still remembers April 27, 2011 like it was yesterday.

"I got up and actually went to the front door to look out. There was actually debris already out," Davis said.

He went to his bedroom closet and hid with his wife. He said as soon as he closed the door behind him, all the windows in his bedroom blew out.

The Davis’ lost those windows and some siding on the house. But he said their losses were minimal compared to their neighbors.

"All the houses behind us, you could see at least 20 houses or more when you stepped out on the back door. They were gone. There was nothing back there," he said.

And still nothing's back there six years later. It's why he can't shake the memories.

"You'd like to see homes rebuilt, but I understand why they're not. No one wants to risk moving into an area where you're almost sure something else is going to happen in the future," Davis said.

Today, Davis makes a pot of coffee for himself: a daily ritual. He showed off his wife's beautiful rose garden, and there's no sign of disaster or loss in or around the house. Until you take a look out the back door, that is.

"Most people didn't want to rebuild in this area. All these lots that are still open. The people just decided not to come back. You can't help but notice it," he said.
