MOULTON, AL (WAFF) -

Mayor Roger Weatherwax said a group of senior men meeting about 20 hours a week at City Hall will be allowed to continue to meet and drink their coffee.

At a Tuesday night work session, Weatherwax said he had taken an informal survey of the council members and discovered three of the five were OK with the 10 to 12 men meeting at City Hall five days a week.

Last week, Jimmie Mitchell, 80, said former Mayor Ray Alexander invited them to drink coffee at City Hall after two downtown businesses they used to hang out at went out of business. Mitchell said they’ve been at City Hall about seven years. The other five men drinking coffee that day refused to be identified and had no comment.

Councilwomen Joyce Jeffreys and Cassandra Lee said the men should not be there every day, and last week asked the mayor to “handle it.”
