HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A new financial initiative by the Huntsville Housing Authority is aimed at helping people in low-income housing save money by focusing on food. All you need is a shovel, gloves and soil.

The Huntsville Housing Authority is teaching many of its residents how to save on food by simply gardening.

Lindsay Pollard with the housing authority said any way to get residents outside in a positive way goes a long way.

"We want them to take away all the skills and all the tools that they're going to teach them today so they can start little gardens in front of their apartments or on their terraces," said Pollard.

One such resident is Jeremi Ardis. With six children and one income, life is full of ups, but she admits her downs take a toll. This single mother lives in public housing and spends her day looking for new ways to get by.

"You have to make ends meet as best as you can," said Ardis.

"I can spend anywhere from $50 to $60, and that's just based on side items," she said.

But her prayers were answered Tuesday morning with the housing authority's gardening initiative.

"Saving money, eating healthy, it's awesome to me," she said.
