MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville firefighters say the Dollar General on Madison Pike is a total loss following Sunday's fire.

The first of several emergency calls came in at 5:45 p.m. Sunday.

Firefighters say there was heavy smoke and flames when they arrived on the scene near the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.

They successfully extinguished the initial fire, which employees say started in the outdoor section and was fueled by bags of charcoal, but the flames had already spread to the ceiling.

Within minutes, the fire was coming through the structure’s roof and firefighters had to be pulled out for safety reasons.

Capt. Frank McKenzie said seven units responded and were switched out over several hours until the fire was contained.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Three customers and three employees were in the store when the fire broke out. All of them escaped without injury.

McKenzie said they are hoping to retrieve the surveillance video, but it may not be salvageable.
