HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

There are hundreds of art studios at Lowe Mill featuring artists from all walks of life. One studio in particular, though, is focused on helping people with special needs right here in our community.

InsideOut’s goal is to help people with disabilities become more confident and more independent through art.

“This studio has helped me overcome so many things," said Maria Rivette, an artist at InsideOut.

The studio is totally free and always looking for more artists.

It appears to be your ordinary, fully-equipped studio. Its artists, however, are anything but ordinary.

"I am legally blind, but I have been blessed that I can see well enough,” Rivette said.

On top of that, Rivette said she suffers from cerebral palsy. But the studio brings out her creativity and takes her focus off her health for a little while, she said.

"If we want help, we can always ask, but we're free to do whatever we want to do, and we're just like everyone else doing art," Rivette said.

"Just like everyone else doing art" is InsideOut's entire mission, that its artists are treated like the equals they are.

"One thing I really want to teach the world is just because you have special needs, your disability doesn't mean you can’t do things. You may be slower getting there but you can do anything you want,” Rivette said.

And through art, she teaches all of us just that.
