ARAB, AL (WAFF) -

Residents traveling through downtown Arab in Marshall County will soon have a much clearer view through their windshield.

The city has been approved for an approximately $800,000 downtown beautification grant.

Main Street is filled with utility poles, and the grant would relocate those poles to the rear of businesses. This will open up space above and space below on sidewalks.

Mayor Bob Joslin said the sidewalks will be redone and include making them handicap-accessible.

Joslin said businesses are pitching in.

“We have new owners and they're upgrading their facilities to make them more appealing to people to come to that area, so it takes a while to build on that but hopefully it will encourage more participation in the downtown area,” he said.

Joslin said bids were opened Thursday morning and the low bid is expected to be approved in May with construction beginning this summer.
