Athens parents learn about elementary academies plan

ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Elementary schools in the Athens City Schools district will become academies with different themes of study by fall 2018.

On Tuesday night, school leaders met with parents to tell them how it will work at Athens Intermediate School.

In addition to Spark Academy, which started this year, three more schools will become academies that each have a specific focus of study. Each will also have a core curriculum that is uniform among the academies.

Dozens of parents had a lot of questions at the meeting about the plan. What they learned is there will be four themes chosen among six choices: computer science, health and medical, classical studies, environmental studies, business and entrepreneurial design, and fine arts.

Three will be in place by fall 2018. The fourth will be held and used if another elementary school is opened.

Superintendent Trey Holladay said there are several advantages. One is increasing opportunities for families by allowing their kids to attend the school of their choice, regardless of where they live.

The school board wants to have the themes chosen by sometime in May.

"We want to be a school system that can actually change with the need of our community. So, therefore, we think that's important. We saw the success of our first academy this past year. this current year, with the Spark School. We see that as being a very positive thing that lets us for the best families and students moving into the area," Holladay said.

The school system has a survey to help narrow the themes down to four. To take part, click here.
