GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Residents in Guntersville turned out Tuesday afternoon to clean up the city.

It's the annual Great American Cleanup, which brought out several volunteers to help.

Officials thought about giving up with the threat of rain, but they decided to move forward and turns out the weather cooperated.

Residents turned out to the Rotary Cabin to collect to collect their gloves, bags and pickup sticks to begin cleaning up Guntersville. The event started at 3 p.m., and officials say all they asked is for people to take 30 minutes to pick up litter from along the lake shoreline, area parks or roads in the city to keep Guntersville beautiful.

They also encouraged people to separate paper from plastic from aluminum to encourage recycling as well.

Officials say they wish people would be mindful of what it takes to be a clean city.

“You have to be vigilant. You have to try to tarp the back of your pickup so that it contains anything that you have thrown back there, that if you go through the drive-thru when you're eating in your car, please try to contain your trash so it doesn't blow out when you open the door,” said Keep Guntersville Beautiful director Nicole Reyes.

Volunteers were rewarded for their efforts with a cookout at Williamson-Harris Park late Tuesday afternoon.
