GUNTERSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Officials in Guntersville hope to replace a neglected pier ahead of a professional boat race coming to Lake Guntersville in the next few years.

The pier is located next to the Guntersville Rescue Squad building.

Officials say replacing it comes down to a safety issue. Officials came to realize the pier needed to be replaced because the landing there will be the centralized location for rescue efforts if needed.

City officials in Guntersville are excited about professional boat racing coming to the area in 2018. But they're already getting ready for a June test run.

The boats are set to be placed in the water near the Guntersville Rescue Squad.

Officials say the pier, which serves the dock, is more than 50 years old and needs replacing. So the rescue squad is raising money to help make that happen.

Officials say they want to have a safe pier to have rescue squad boats immediately available in case something happens during the race or whenever.

“Hopefully, we can keep a boat there during the summer months, especially so that other calls we have, we'll have a boat in the water and make our response time better than what it is now,” said Guntersville Rescue Squad president Frank Myers.

The pier is expected to be constructed by the June test run.

Myers says they're still raising funds. If you would like to help, Myers says you can make a tax deductible donation to the Rescue Squad or attend their annual Car Show fundraiser in May.
