HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville city leaders are moving forward with converting Grissom High School into a community center complex.

City council members approved plans to demolish a large portion of the building at Thursday night’s meeting.

Grissom High School students will move into their new building in August.

City leaders are already making plans for when they take over the property this summer. They say the school's outdoor sports facilities will be available for public use as soon as school lets out in May.

The community center will include a new library and walking trails for neighbors.

There are also plans to demolish one of the buildings where classrooms and administrative offices are located. And they're renovating the other side where two gymnasiums, a cafeteria and theater are located.

"This contract, one it's going in to accessing where's the appropriate place to essentially cut that building,” said city administrator John Hamilton. “So imagine that building being saw cut at some point and everything to the left being demolished and everything to the right being saved. You're obviously going to have a gaping hole in that building that has to be closed up."

Arts Huntsville will be a tenant of the theater, and the Huntsville Parks and Recreation Department will oversee the gymnasiums and outdoor sporting facilities.
