WATERLOO, AL (WAFF) -

Lauderdale County leaders recognized two Waterloo High School students for helping to save a life. They each received Medals of Valor from first responders.

This past February, a car ran into their school, hitting a young girl waiting to be picked up. The duo quickly jumped off the bus and immediately became the first responders to a serious accident.

"it was a little different from most calls cause you’re not expecting it, you know, You. hadn't been paged out to it, but the instinct just kicked in and you go to work," said Chandler Cole.

Cole, a junior, and Dacota George, a senior, are both still in high school and a part of the Waterloo Fire Department Explorer Program who helped save a 9-year old girl trapped underneath a car at school. Now they get to take home Medals of Valor for their heroic efforts.

"You did something that a lot of us couldn't do," said Commissioner Fay Parker.

"You truly are an asset and a blessing to this county. Thank you for your service," said Commissioner Brad Holmes.

This life-saving award is actually the first time Shoals Ambulance has given it out.

"They did the right thing at the exactly the right job, at the right job, at the right place, and that makes them heroes," said Shoals Ambulance operating manager Blake Hargett.

“I’d love to be able to do it again,” said Chandler.

The two friends actually knew the little girl well, it was their fire chiefs granddaughter, so seeing her recover was also a moment they'll never forget.

"I'm not going to lie. I cried,” Chandler said. “It was cause when we removed her, I personally thought her chances were slim, and seeing her walking, she was only in a sling, it was amazing to me. It shows God truly does have miracles.”

“Just picture her getting her out of the car and then see her out of the hospital, it was tremendous," said George.

They both plan to continue being volunteers for the Waterloo Fire Department. And one is seriously considering being a first responder as his full-time career.
