HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

The future of downtown Huntsville is now available for you to see.

One of two public meetings was held Thursday night at the Von Braun Center to unveil preliminary master plans for downtown Huntsville.

Urban Design Associates, the company hired to put together a master plan, unveiled their redevelopment proposal to the public.

City planning officials say the goal is to get feedback.

"Most folks get a little skeptical. They're like, 'Oh, you're just checking a box,'" said Dennis Madsen of urban development with the city of Huntsville. “It really, really drives a lot of what we do."

The presentation highlighted previous suggestions from the community.

One of the main objections is to connecting areas of downtown Huntsville by making it more pedestrian- and bike-friendly.

"Very excited about the developments and just the overall project,” said Navette Wall, a downtown business owner.

Arts Huntsville is also on board. The nonprofit hopes improvements will bring more people to the area.

"We're talking about connectivity throughout the downtown and you do that through walkability and through arts and entertainment and retail. It's part of a whole big picture,” said Allison Dillon-Jauken, executive director of Arts Huntsville.

Now, that city developers have your opinion, here's what happens next.

"After we get the feedback, that's another round of edits the consultant will take it back. We'll talk a little bit with them about what we heard, where we think the direction's going. They'll began to formulate that master plan,” said Madsen.

City officials say residents can expect a second round of presentations early this summer before the final downtown master plan is complete.
