HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Gate 1

Traffic pattern changes start Friday outside Redstone Arsenal's Gate 1.

You'll recognize the area from all the construction off South Memorial Parkway.

The Alabama Department of Transportation wants you to know if you drive along Martin Road to go northbound on the Parkway. The new ramp will be open Friday. Right at 10 a.m. Friday the new ramp just west of the current one will be usable.

This will affect you if you use Gate 1 to get on and off Redstone.

Officials say the ramp will eventually be part of the northbound service road, but for now it's a single-lane ramp for one-way traffic.

Walking trails

Redstone has some great walking trails all along the Arsenal, but recent storms have uprooted trees and broken off limbs that are now causing an issue.

Parts of the trails behind Building 4315 are taped off. The Marshall grounds maintenance team also chained off the main entrances.

Redstone officials ask you to stay off the trails right now as they clear the debris. Officials say they should be done in about a week.

For now, you can always use Pioneer Road loop around the softball fields as an alternate trail.

Missile defense protest

A vigil and demonstration is planned for right outside Redstone's Gate 9.

It's hosted by Global Network Against Weapons and Nuclear Power in Space.

It's a part of their 25th annual Space Organizing Conference that runs Friday through Sunday.

The group says they're protesting against missile defense and the weaponization of space.

There is estimated to be anywhere from 40 to 50 people gathered, blocking the roadway in a peaceful demonstration.

Be aware that this will happen from 4 p.m. until about 5:30 p.m. Friday outside Gate 9.

If you usually leave the Arsenal through that gate, Redstone officials want you to find another way out.
