Decatur woman indicted for husband's murder

DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

A Morgan County grand jury indicted a Decatur woman for the murder of her husband.

Michelle Owens is accused of shooting and killing her husband, Eddie, in June 2016. Police found his body inside the family home on Lenox Drive.

The couple’s son called 911 and told the call-taker his mother was inside with his younger brother and father. The son said she would not let him in the house. He told the dispatcher he heard his younger brother say their mother killed their father.

A judge ordered a mental examination shortly after her arrest. According to court documents, Owens was “extremely disruptive” and was unable to understand her initial appearance proceedings. A family member told the court Owens was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the year before the murder.

A licensed psychologist with evaluated Owens and submitted a report to the judge. The judge reviewed the report and determined Owens is competent to stand trial. The mental evaluation will remain under seal and unavailable to the public.

A trial date has not been set. Owens remains in jail.
