Bama falls to Richmond in first round of NIT

The Alabama men’s basketball team lost a 71-64 decision to the sixth-seeded Richmond Spiders on Tuesday night at Coleman Coliseum as part of the first round of the 2017 National Invitational Tournament. The Crimson Tide finished the 2016-17 campaign with a 19-15 overall record, including a 10-8 mark in Southeastern Conference play. 

Senior Corban Collins registered a team-high 19 points, while senior Bola Olaniyan led the team in rebounds with seven. 

Richmond outscored Alabama 36-32 through the first 20 minutes of play to take a four-point lead headed into halftime. Collins led the Tide offensively with eight points followed by junior Riley Norris’ seven first half points. The Tide shot 46 percent (13-of-28) from the field in the first half, and its bench outscored the Spiders’ reserves by a 16-0 margin. 

The Spiders went on to outscore the Tide 35-32 in the second half resulting in the final score. Alabama shot 38 percent (12-of-32) from the field in the final 20 minutes of the game, while shooting 29 percent (4-of-14) from behind the three-point line. 

Alabama shot 42 percent (25-of-60) from the field in the 40 minute contest, while going seven-for-seven from the charity stripe.
