TUSCUMBIA, AL (WAFF) -

A mother and son are in the hospital after strong storms destroyed the family's home. 

Crews responded to Underwood Mountain around 7p.m. when storms began to roll across North Alabama. 

The family tells WAFF 48 the mother's oldest son, who wasn't injured in the storm, had to hold up the fallen roof with his back to keep it from crushing his mother. 

The younger son, who is 55-years-old, suffered broken ribs and a torn artery. He is being treated at Huntsville Hospital. 

The mother, who is 91-years-old, escaped with cuts to her leg.
