DECATUR, AL (WAFF) -

The gallery at the Alabama Center for the Arts is focusing on home grown talent and paying homage to artists with strong ties or are natives of Alabama.

That broad spectrum includes a lot of people. Bruce Larson, sculptor; Tillman Crane, photographer; Wes Chapmen, ballet dancer; the quilters of Gees Bend, works by Mildred Nungester Wolfe are artists that were recently inducted into the hall of fame.

"This inaugural class of inductees is broad. And we wanted to touch a lot of areas. We have performers. We have visual artists. We have sculptors, photographers, fabric artists. So we really wanted to cover a broad spectrum," said Jennifer Bunnell.

If you grew up in the South, you're familiar with quilts. But the quilts on display at the gallery, have a very special meaning for Alabama.

"These quilts, obviously, you can see the love and the soul that are put into each stitch by the lovely ladies of Gees Bend," according to Bunnell.

Bunnell said there are still many people they have not honored yet.
