SHEFFIELD, AL (WAFF) - The report provided by the Muscle Shoals Police Department concerning the death of Sheffield High School Coach Jared Mothershed lists the cause of death as suicide.
Tuesday, the Colbert County Coroner reported Mothershed's death as accidental. However, coroner Calton Utley later clarified that not all of the information has been compiled, and an official cause of death is still pending.
Utley's investigation remains open at this time.
According to the police report, 911 notified the police department about a suicidal man on Saturday. 911 called back and stated there was a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officers say when the arrived at the Mothershed home, they found a man on the floor of a shed with an AR15-type rifle next to him.
Sheffield Schools Superintendent Keith Lankford confirmed Mothershed was placed on administrative leave at the end of October, "pending the results of a personnel investigation".
Friday, the Sheffield Police Department took a report concerning a school employee engaging in a sex act or deviant sexual intercourse with a student. That investigation also remains open.
