I read an interesting article the other day. Did you know that 70 percent of people who die in traffic crashes are not wearing a seat belt? What surprised me is how high that number is. It’s been clear for a long time that taking a second or two to put on your seatbelt is a really good idea. Did you know that 1 in 3 people will be injured in a motor vehicle accident if they are not wearing a seat belt, while only 1 in 8 people will be injured if they are wearing a seat belt? An unbelted occupant of a 30 mph car crash hits the windshield or other interior car surface with the same impact as a fall from a three-story building. People without seat belts have been killed at speeds as low as 12 mph. The effectiveness of an air bag system drops 40 percent when a seat belt is not used. Seat belts would have saved the lives of more than one-half of the car passengers killed each year. So remember, take a couple of seconds and put your seat belt on every time you drive a vehicle. Your life may depend on it.
