HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Huntsville police are investigating a late-night fatal shooting that involved four people.

The shooting happened around 12:45 a.m. on Tuesday in the 2200 block Evans Avenue.

Police say there was an altercation between several people and shots were fired. While officers were attempting to locate the crime scene, four victims from the shooting arrived at Huntsville Hospital in personal cars.

Police confirm 18-year-old Phillip Montague died at the hospital as a result of his injuries.

His cousin, Avannah Scruggs, said he was shot multiple times. He died in surgery at Huntsville Hospital.

Scruggs described her cousin as someone everyone looked up to.

"We knew that he was going to go far in life. We were behind him 100 percent and we still are," she said.

There is no word yet on the conditions of the other victims.

The shooter was among the injured. It's unclear if the deceased was the shooter or a victim.

Police say they found out about the shooting when an off-duty officer at the hospital spotted them upon arrival.

At about the same time this happened, there was an unrelated fatal shooting in Huntsville.
