HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A big relief for Huntsville City Schools parents, as the district is unveiling a new app to make it safer for bus riders.

School leaders say the app will make it easier for parents to track their child's school bus.

The app screen looks like a standard map, and it tells you when your child is expected to be dropped off, and according to the app's developer Versatrans, it also tells you exactly where your child's bus is at any given time.

Durham Schools Services, has been working with Versatrans to implement the system for just two months, and they're ready to roll out the app to parents. You can use an app on your smartphone or tablet, or your desktop computer to use the system.

They say the app is simple and aims to give parents not just peace of mind but critical alerts to bus drivers and staff about emergency situations.

“Huntsville City Schools and Durham School Services hope to make the transportation experience more seamless and user-friendly for our Huntsville City Schools Families,” said Director of Operations Dr. Jeffrey Wilson.

Versatrans says it's a secure system and the network is password protected by users.

If you're a Huntsville City School's parent, you'll receive instructions on how to use the system, in a letter to be mailed home on Monday.
