The Bulldogs tip off the 2016-17 season in less than a month and they'll have a couple of all-conference players leading the way.
Senior guard Rakiya Battle and senior center Quinterian McConico were named to the All-Southwestern Athletic Conference second team, the league announced Wednesday.
The Bulldogs were picked to finish eighth this year in the poll of the league's head coaches and sports information directors. Texas Southern was the preseason favorite, followed by Jackson State and Southern.
Battle, a graduate of Sparkman High, led the SWAC in assists in each of the last two seasons. He had 5.3 assists per game last season and 6 per game in 2014-15. Battle, a point guard with great hands, was second in the SWAC with an assist/turnover ratio of 2.6. In 2014 to 2015, he had a 3.0 assist/turnover ratio.
McConico was a strong force inside for the Bulldogs last season with a .643 shooting percentage from the field. He scored a career-high 18 points against rival Alabama State last season in one of his seven starts.
A "sixth man" as well for Head Coach Willie Hayes, McConico came off the bench to score 12 points against Southern and 14 against Jackson State.
The Bulldogs open their season Nov. 11 at Missouri State and then visit Missouri on Nov. 13.
The home opener is Dec. 3 when Tennessee Tech visits Elmore Gym for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
