HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A nonprofit boating group is at odds with the Madison County Commission.

Whitesburg Boating and Yacht Club representatives said they don't know why the commission is firing them from managing the Madison County Harbor near Ditto Landing. The group said District 5 Commissioner Phil Reddrick told them their lease won't be renewed when it ends in November.

They said because they're a nonprofit, they've been able to charge less for boating storage at the Madison County Boat Harbor on Harbor Road.

They said commissioners want Ditto Landing to manage the boat harbor.

The Whitesburg Boating and Yacht Group said they've managed the property since the 1950s. The volunteer nonprofit said they found out last week about the commissioners' plans through a boat house owner at the harbor.

“We weren't included. We weren't informed,. That's kind of frustrating,” said Mark Horton, a Whitesburg Boating and Yacht Club board member. “And it's still just phone calls. I'm not sitting in the meeting. I don't know what the grand plan is. We didn't know if they were going to come and bulldoze the whole thing down or keep it.”

Group representatives said they still don’t know what future plans are for the harbor once they’re no longer managing it.

The group is having a meeting at 10 a.m. Saturday at the harbor to talk to boat house owners and storage renters to inform them of what's going on.

Phone calls to Reddrick have not been returned.
