HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

For the first time in nearly three decades, a new face will represent North Huntsville residents.

Devyn Keith defeated 28-year incumbent, Richard Showers, for the District 1 seat during the Oct. 4 municipal election. Council members held a special meeting Tuesday morning to certify the district one election votes.

Keith, a political newcomer, doubled the number of voters and defeated veteran councilman Showers. Keith topped out the municipal election with 2,521 votes. Official numbers show Showers had 1,148 votes.

City Councilman Will Culver said it will be an adjustment without Showers, but he's hoping for a smooth transition for Keith.

“Anytime there is a change on the city council, it changes the chemistry and I'm waiting to see how all of that is going to play out,” Culver aid. “But the people in District 1 have elected Devyn Keith to be their voice, and he will be their representative. I'm looking forward to working with him as I have worked with all of the previous and current council members.”

Keith will be sworn in as Huntsville’s District 1 Councilman on Nov. 7.
