Caught on camera: Thieves steal Halloween decorations in Madison

MADISON, AL (WAFF) -

Homeowners in multiple Madison neighborhoods are short a few Halloween pumpkins. And a surveillance video shows suspects stealing the decorations right off their front porch.

The men are shown on camera walking up to a home, but the thieves didn't know a camera was recording their every move.

"My mom checked the cameras just to make sure and saw someone came onto our property to steal stuff of our porch," Justin Prater said.

Neighbors in Mill Creek Crossing, Pebbebrook and other subdivisions throughout Madison told WAFF 48 News they just wanted to get in the holiday spirit, but many woke up to stolen decorations Monday morning.

"You know, if you're that serious about a pumpkin, my goodness," Jeffery Summerhill said.

Summerhill built a fall-themed throne made of hay bales and decorated with flowers and pumpkins for families to take photos with. He said he was trying to do something nice for his community and was upset to see his pumpkins stolen.

"We all work hard to have nice things. We don't work to just work," Summerhill said.

Some neighbors said the holiday spooks have now become a reality.

"It's kind of hard to feel safe at night, I guess, because if they're starting here, what will they move onto next?" Marissa Walker said.

Capt. John Stringer with the Madison Police Department said officers want to stop Halloween pranks, theft and vandalism, so he urges people to contact local law enforcement if they see anything out of the ordinary this holiday season.
