HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Hurricane Matthew hit Haiti as a Category 4 storm causing devastation to the area.

The Haitian government's official death toll is nearly 300 and is expected to climb.

One local college student who has family in the country and is trying everyday to cope with the tragedy.

"We don't have that direct of communication," said Gio Bensky Vildor, who attends Oakwood University.

Vildor said he has made multiple calls to his family in Haiti.

"Not everyone has a cell phone, people don't have a way to contact us," said Vildor.
Vildor, who is studying in his third year, said the uncertainty of not being able to get in touch with his family is frightening.

"As the numbers keep climbing you have to sit here and wonder are a part of my family or are we losing people and we don't know it," said Vildor.

The student said all he can do is watch and pray.

"I'm hoping that my family can do all that we can to go down there and help in any way possible," said Vildor.

He said right now no one in his family has been killed, but he and his family in Florida are doing everything to make sure it stays that way.
