PHIL CAMPBELL, AL (WAFF) -

The boyfriend of a woman found dead along a highway in Phil Campbell tells police she jumped from his truck during an argument.

An autopsy is now underway after the discovery of April Welch Hamm's body along a roadside Sunday.

Phil Campbell Police Chief Merrell Potter said they held him for 72 hours but felt like they didn't have enough evidence to press any criminal charges. Potter said the boyfriend cooperated with authorities while he was being held at the Franklin County Jail.

With the lack of evidence of how Hamm got next to the highway and her cause of death, investigators need more time for the autopsy results to come back.
Police say Hamm suffered multiple blunt force trauma to the head.
Police say the boyfriend told them he didn't know where she went but drove back to look for her and couldn't find her.

"In his statement, he says he did drive up and down the road there and got out and looked with a flashlight but did not see her and then he tried and called her later on a cellphone, but we were never notified no other authorities were ever notified so no one went out to search,” Potter said.

Investigators are waiting to get back the forensic evidence to help determine whether they can press any criminal charges. Potter said the boyfriend could be charged with leaving the scene of an accident.
