Mayor says more jobs, millions in investments coming to Athens

ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

Nearly three dozen high-paying jobs are headed to Athens through a business expansion, but Athens Mayor Ronnie Marks revealed those are not the only job projects they're working on.

According to Marks, the first project is part of a $3 million expansion of a rehabilitation center near Athens-Limestone Hospital. It's expected to bring between 20 and 30 jobs.

Marks said another jobs project is in the works, and conversations on it occurred on Monday. Marks didn't say what the project is because some details are still being ironed out. But he did say that it involves “several hundred jobs.”

He used it as an example to show how well-positioned Athens, Huntsville, and other parts of Madison County and Limestone County are in terms of recent job growth.

“Huntsville and Limestone County are working on projects,” said Marks. “The Tennessee Valley area right now is just hot.”

The Athens City Council will discuss a $65,000 incentives package for the rehabilitation expansion in the next few weeks.
