BLOUNTSVILLE, AL (WBRC) -

Small town football is one of my favorites.

I get to talk to all the towns people and hear wonderful stories, like the one when the JB Pennington football team burst through the sign and ran onto the field waving American flags. It was the students' idea and it was up to the team to pull out a victory.

In the first quarter, Fultondale methodically went down the field, gulping up first downs until they got down to the six yard line and Jason King scored to get the Wildcats a 7-0 lead.

Later in the quarter, Fultondale’s freshman quarterback Jayson Jones, who just turned 15 last week, got busy with his speed. He ran a play around the right corner and ended up getting 50 yards and a first down at the 10 yard line.

But the Pennington defense held strong and the wildcats turned the ball over on downs.

The next series, Pennington quarterback Travis Cleveland threw a 45-yard pass to Cole Littleton to the seven-yard line. then three plays later they scored to tie up the ball game.

The next Tiger drive, Cleveland scored a 12-yard touchdown and Pennington took the lead for the first time 14-7.

But with a minute left before the half, Fultondale running back Derrick Moore somehow found a way to break through the line and leave everyone in his dust. He scored a 55-yard touchdown to tie the ballgame up just before the half.

In the third quarter, Moore on a trap play, took his running play to the house for a 55-yard touchdown to take the lead for Fultondale 21-14.

Later in the same quarter, Walter Blair got a long 50-yard touchdown for the Wildcats to make it 28-14.

Pennington trailing by two touchdowns in the 4th quarter got a spark when Travis Haynes scores and gets the Tigers within seven points.

But Fultondale continued to score points and they pulled out the victory 49-34.

Fultondale improves to 5-1, while JB Pennington drops to 5-2.
