ATHENS, AL (WAFF) -

There’s nothing like a Fall Football Friday night in the Tennessee Valley.

The game becomes even more special when it’s a historic high school football rivalry.

Friday night, we’ll see the 88th edition of the long-standing Decatur-Athens rivalry.

Decatur leads the all-time series 58-27-2 and the Red Raiders won last year’s game 41-26.

This rivalry has been marked by great teams, great games and some great players.

In fact, current NFL stars like Phillip River (Athens) and Jerraud Powers (Decatur) have been involved in this series. And even though Decatur does have an inner city rival in Austin and both have a neighboring rival in Hartselle, this game means more than just records.

In fact, with Decatur and Athens are both in the same region. That means this game will also include definite playoff implications.

We’ll be adding to the great atmosphere Friday night as the WAFF 48 Tailgate Tour will be set up at Athens High School.

Our live reports will begin during our 4pm newscast. So be sure and join Scott Theisen, Brad Travis and company for the food, fun and festivities.

Yet another exciting chapter will be added to the history books between the Golden Eagles and the Red Raiders. Enjoy!
