MADISON COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

Scammers are targeting customers of Redstone Federal Credit Union and surrounding area banks.

The credit union, which operates 11 branches across Madison county, issued an alert to customers on Thursday. Redstone officials said this scam is the first of its kind.

"It can be extremely damaging," said Fred Trusty, Executive Vice President for the credit union. "It can wipe out your account and make a ton of charges.”

The alert claims text messages from a number posing as a reputable organization are asking for credit card numbers, expiration dates and CVV numbers.

Redstone Federal Credit Union told customers it will never ask for secure information through a text message. Trusty said if you get a text message  that asks you to click a link and then put in your credit card information, do not it!

"As soon as that fraudster gets that information, your credit card or debit is compromised immediately," said Trusty.

If your Redstone credit card is a target to this scam, officials say you are covered. But if you have already received a scam text you are encouraged to call the credit union at (256) 837-6110.

Federal Credit Union officials said customers should expect to see a new logo and branding on their website Monday.
