Huntsville city council approves 2017 budget

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Thursday night the Huntsville City Council approved the 2017 fiscal year budget.

Highlights from the new budget include a 2% cost of living adjustment for city employees.

Council members also approved funding for the hiring of 8 additional police officers which brings the number of Huntsville Police Department officers to 650 for next year.

The biggest chunk of spending will likely go toward road improvement.  Two-thirds of that money will be spent on the repaving of residential streets.

This comes as the council voted to amend the city's existing capital improvement plan.

In all the 2017 budget is about $6 million over the 2016 operating budget.

You can review the entire budget right now.
