HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A glimmer of history is set to sail into Huntsville at the end of the month.

Both the Niña and the Pinta replicas of the fifteenth-century ships used by Christopher Columbus will be on display while docked at Ditto Landing starting September 29 to October 10. The ships will be open daily for public viewing from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The two ships tour together as a new enhanced "sailing museum" used to educate the public and children on the caravel, a type of Portuguese ship used by the early explorer and many others to discover parts of the world.

While docked in port, the public is invited to participate in self-guided tours aboard the ships. No reservations are needed for individual visits.

The price list is as follows:

  • Adults - $8
  • Seniors - $7
  • Ages 5-16 - $6

Teachers and groups, with a minimum of 15 people, looking to schedule a 30-minute guided tour with a crew member can call 1-787-672-2152 or email columfnd1492@gmail.com. The group rate is $5 per person.

The replica of the Niña is considered the most historically accurate Columbus ship ever built. The replica of the Pinta was built subsequently to accompany the other ship on her travels.
