HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) - Dr. Casey Wardynski will step down as the superintendent of Huntsville City Schools, pending board approval on Thursday night.

Dr. Wardynski made the announcement on Wednesday.

The Huntsville City School system is set to begin discussion Thursday on a contract modification involving private academy Pinnacle Schools.

Dr. Wardynski confirmed he has an ongoing romantic relationship with Pinnacle Schools Founder Karen Lee and has plans of marrying her.

"At some point, a superintendent is entitled to have a life," said Dr. Wardynski. "If I were to marry Ms. Lee while I was superintendent it would be a problem."

Wardynski became Superintendent in 2011. His wife passed away in December 2015.

Huntsville City Schools has been under contract with Pinnacle since 2012.

Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle released the following statement following the news conference:

Over the past five years, Dr. Wardynski has had several great accomplishments in the Huntsville City School system.  We thank him for his work and express confidence in the Huntsville City School Board's continued 'search for excellence' with our school system.  I have confidence in their choice of an interim superintendent and their ability to do a quality, nationwide search for a permanent superintendent to lead what we believe to be one of the best school systems in the nation.

The school board will hold a special called meeting on Thursday night at 5:00p.m. to announce proceedings for naming an interim superintendent.
