HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

A complaint about Alabama A&M University has prompted an investigation by the U.S. Department of Education.

WAFF 48 News has learned the complaint originated from a former A&M student and was made directly to the Department of Education's civil rights office. The Department of Education confirmed they launched the investigation just days ago after receiving that complaint.

The spokesperson was limited in providing many details but said the investigation is looking into possible discrimination based on someone's sex, denial of benefits or retaliation of some sort happening on the campus.

A university representative said they are complying with the investigation but wouldn't comment further until it is closed.

Department of Education spokesman Alberto Betancourt gave the following statement:

"The U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR), currently has one investigation open at the Alabama A&M University. The case involves possible discrimination on the basis of sex (Title IX) for issues of different treatment/exclusion/denial of benefits/other and retaliation. The investigation was launched on 8/24/2016. However, because this is an open investigation, OCR cannot provide additional information about the case.
