The Western Collegiate Hockey Association is changing the rules ahead of the 2016-2017 hockey season.

Changes include the introduction of a 3-on-3 overtime and shootout, new game regulations and standardized nets.

OVERTIME

  • Any game that ends in a regulation tie will go to a five minute 5-on-5 overtime period
  • If no winner, teams will advance to a five minute 3-on-3 second overtime period
  • If no winner, the game will be settled in a sudden death shootout

POINTS STRUCTURE

  • Games ending with a regulation win, or single overtime win, will be worth 3 points for the winning team
  • Games ending with a 3-on-3 overtime or shootout win will be worth 2 points to the winning team and 1 point to the losing team

NETS

  • All WCHA teams will now use NHL standard 40-inch goal frames

Currently, a majority of WCHA teams were using 44-inch goal frames.
