$250,000 in emergency funds will go toward fighting Zika, and the mosquitoes that carry it, across Alabama.

Friday Governor Robert Bentley authorized the funding after receiving a request for help from the Alabama Department of Public Health.

State health officer Dr. Tom Miller believes the funds will make a significant impact on fighting mosquito populations.

We are very pleased that Governor Bentley has approved the use of emergency funds to assist us with combatting Zika in Alabama. It is very likely that we will have local transmission of the Zika virus by mosquitos like Florida is now experiencing. These funds will assist us to respond aggressively to protect our citizens.
