MCSO creating safe zone for online sales following robbery

On Thursday, Madison County investigators confirmed a Craigslist post led to a robbery and shooting in New Hope on Tuesday night. The victim is recovering and both suspects, Myndarius Rogers and Travion Malone, face attempted murder and robbery charges.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office is now in the process of making their annex a safe zone to hopefully prevent a similar crime occurring. Department leaders want anyone doing business online, including Craigslist, to conduct transactions there and not at a home or public parking lot.

A Madison County investigator said this is the first time he can remember when a suspect or suspects in his jurisdiction tracked down a robbery victim through a Craigslist post. However, WAFF 48's sister station in Memphis has covered several similar stories recently.

Madison County Sheriff's Office leaders said that's why it's now so important to visit a safe zone like their sheriff's annex whenever you do these kinds of transactions.

“I've purchased stuff online and I've met people in the post office parking lot, the grocery store parking lot. Even me being in law enforcement, you don't know what could happen meeting a total stranger,” said Lt. Brian Chaffin.

If you don't want to come to the Madison County Sheriff's Annex to do one of these transaction, check with your local authorities to see if you have one nearby. Both Madison and Huntsville police have set up similar safe zones.
