AL House Republicans select Mac McCutcheon as nominee for speaker of the house

Alabama House Republicans selected Representative Mac McCutcheon of Madison County as their nominee for Speaker. 

"I'm humbled by the faith and confidence that my fellow Republicans have placed in me, and, if elected as Speaker, I pledge to preside in a manner that treats all members of both parties in a fair and honorable manner," McCutcheon said. "Our state faces many challenges ranging from education to ethics to ensuring adequate funding for even the most basic government services, and finding needed solutions will require all of us to work together."

Republicans currently make up the majority of the House. The Caucus nomination was awarded by acclimation after rounds of balloting were complete. 

He announced that he would run for the House Speaker position in June of 2016.

A special session will convene on August 15. 

McCutcheon was elected in 2006 and serves as chairman of the agenda-setting House Rules Committee. 

Prior to his election he served 25 years in law enforcement in Huntsville and worked in areas like hostage negotiation, major crimes investigators, probation officers and other roles. He has also worked as a farmer and associate pastor at the College Park Church of God. 

McCutcheon is a U.S. Army veteran with a degree in criminal justice administration from Trinity University.
