Incoming commanding general at Redstone Arsenal dies

HUNTSVILLE, AL (WAFF) -

Major General John Rossi, who was set to take over a command at Redstone Arsenal, died on Sunday according to the Fort Sill Public Affairs Offices.

His death was reported by our Raycom sister station KSWO. Maj. Gen. Rossi had previously served at Fort Sill, which is located southwest of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. 

"Our thoughts and prayers are with Maj. Gen. John G. Rossi's family.  We share their grief during this time of loss. Our priority right now is to take care of the family, ensuring they have all the resources they need during this critical time," said Lt. Gen. Larry Wyche, Army Materiel Command deputy commanding general and Redstone Arsenal senior commander."

Major General Rossi took over as Commanding General at Fort Sill in 2014. He was scheduled to assume command for the United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command-Army Forces Strategic Command at the Arsenal.

According to his biography, Rossi graduated from West Point in 1983 and was commissioned in the Army as an Air Defense Artillery Officer. He commanded at every level and became Commanding General of the U.S. Army Fires Center of Excellence and Fort Sill in 2014.

He leaves behind his wife Liz, a native of El Paso, Texas, three children and one grandchild.

Special agents with Crime Investigation Department on the Arsenal are investigating.

Major General Rossi's body is at Fort Campbell for an autopsy and Lieutenant General David Mann will remain on the job and  will not retire on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, Major General Rossi would have become Lieutenant General Rossi, getting a promotion and a change of command.
